Description
Now an HBO original series, True Blood-the New York Times bestselling Sookie Stackhouse series continues.

Except for Sookie Stackhouse, folks in Bon Temps, Louisiana, recognize little concerning vamps-and nothing concerning weres.

Until now. The weres and shifters have finally decided to reveal their existence to the ordinary world. At first all goes well. Then the mutilated body of a were-panther is found near the bar where Sookie works-and she feels compelled to discover who, human or otherwise, did it.

But there's a far greater danger threatening Bon Temps. A race of unhuman beings-older, extra great, and extra secretive than vampires or werewolves-is preparing for war. And Sookie locates herself an all-too human pawn in their battle.

From the back cover:
The horribly mutilated body of a were-panther is found in the parking lot of Merlotte's. Though Sookie never cared that much for the victim,no one deserves such a horrible death, and she agrees to use her telepathic talent to track down the murderer. What Sookie doesn't realise is that there is a far greater danger than this killer threatening Bon Temps: a race of unhuman beings, older, more powerful and far more secretive than the vampires or the werewolves, is preparing for war. And Sookie is an all to human pawn in their ages-old battle....

Review:
It's been awhile since I delved back into the world of Sookie Stackhouse so I was a bit concerned that I would have forgotten major parts of the story and be lost, but there is enough of a re-cap to remind me of the important parts but not so much that it intrudes on the current story. I really enjoyed following on with the story, I felt some of the characters became more complete, which helped to make the Bon Temps world a little more full. I wasn't quite prepared for the ending, but it came as a bit of a shock and made me want to follow on with book 10 asap.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD...

My goodness, so much violence. Why has it become almost mandatory for our heroine to get beaten up every installment of this series? In this book, Sookie really gets the stuffing kicked out of her. The extreme violence is both hard to digest and almost a little boring (if that's possible). We've seen the violence before. Sookie gets hurt, downs a little "v" and all is (almost) better, however, the beating she takes in this book is quite unbearable.

The book starts out with some engaging frivolity as Sookie watches a TV show clearly based on a "What Not To Wear" type series for Vamp gals which is full of the humor we have come to count on from Charlaine Harris as it also illustrates the further mainstreaming of Vamps who like the rest of America have their own reality shows - this one showing Vamp chicks who are just as distressed and disbelieving as humans when confronted for their lack of style.

Quickly, we are brought into Merlotte's awaiting the TV annoucement that Were's are just as real as Vampires. In Bon Temps (at least), the news barely registers a ripple except in Sam's family where it didn't go so well for his Were mother and his unknowing stepdad. Sam needs to go home and leaves Sookie in charge of the bar and after only a few days, we have guess what - another murder at Merlotte's. (Can't killers find another place to deposit bodies?). This one is gruesomely displayed on a crucifix. Then we have trouble with the Fairies who aren't quite seeing eye to eye and Sookie being the great grandaughter of a Fairy Prince, cannot help but be affected by the trouble brewing.

As a reader of Charlaine Harris' other series, Lily Bard & Aurora Teagarden, it seems as if Charlaine has a hefty fixation with women getting beaten up and dealing with survival; it's a constant theme. I understand the author was once raped and I'm sure this has something to do with how she has worked out her demons but I personally find it excessive.

Other than the extreme violence, the problem with this book is that it's all over the place. I've read all the books of this series in a very quick succession so you would think I could remember all the characters and story lines but I had a very hard time. I could imagine how difficult it would be for someone who hasn't recently read the last couple of books so if you haven't, I would strongly recommend re-reading them before starting this one. It's nice to see Eric and Sookie hooking up more frequently but without that delicious tension between them, (Eric is becoming a little too compliant and wimpy with regard to Sookie), it's just not as satisfying.

I love the Sookie Stackhouse books so much, I would even read a book dedicated to Sookie going into a car wash and describing each "sud" at length. So as a true fan and having a tremendous respect for the world Charlaine Harris has created, I'm a little disppointed with this installment. I admire Charlaine's talent and am so grateful for the characters and adventures that she has given to us but I can't blindly say I love this book. Yes, it's still worth reading and there is some pleasure to be derived but it doesn't deserve the praise of the other "can't put em' down" books in the series.

Customer rating is 4 of 5  Sookie's growing up a little?   2010-07-15
By Laura de Leon (Silicon Valley, CA)
I liked Sookie in Dead and Gone. She's growing up a bit, she's trying to think proactively, and is actively working to figure out what her place in the world is.

Of course, the world isn't cooperating.

As always, vampire leader Eric has his own view of the situation. The blood bond they share makes for a compelling argument, and he's got some good logic and a really hot body on his side.

Her family relationships are getting more complicated by the day. Her brother set her up into a very unpleasant situation, and doesn't understand why she won't forgive and forget. She's not willing to go that far, but she will work to prove his innocence when he may be implicated in a murder. Her newly discovered great-grandfather has inadvertently put her in the middle of a faery war.

And so on.

There's a lot of big action here, and less of it involves the weres than I would have though, given that they've now revealed themselves to the human world. In the end, I enjoyed Dead & Gone for the smaller moments between the characters.

Sookie is fun reading. I haven't watched the series, but the books really get your imagination running into overdrive.
