By Steven L. Kent (The GREAT Northwest)
Cobbled together out of thinly disguised excerpts from James Bond novels, but well met for its target audience, Stormbreaker is fun in the Ian Fleming spirit.

How much homage does Stormbreaker pay to Fleming?

Sayle, the bad guy, is a remake of Hugo Drax from Moonraker. (Get the nifty rhyme there--Moonraker, Stormbreaker...) Both men are foreigners with an ax to grind against England because they were bullied in school. Both are fabulously wealthy, both have mysterious ties to a foreign power. Both offer England a Trojan Horse. Drax gives England the Moonraker missile. Sayle has the Stormbreaker computer.

In Stormbreaker, Horowitz takes the giant squid from Dr. No and repackages it as a giant jellyfish.

He takes Rosa Klebb from From Russia with Love and turns her into a German. M, Q Branch, and Oddjob all found their way into Stormbreaker with new names and identities, and the deus ex machina ending will feel familiar to those who have read Casino Royale.

It works. The story is fun, familiar, and perfectly written for its intended audience.

I've been hooked with spy novel as of late; Anna Campbell, Evelyn Salt, Annie Walker or Chuck Bartowski might have slight influence on the whole thing but I am just generally fascinated with the whole espionage business. The mystery, danger and drama of it all provides great entertainment. Young Alex Rider here is no exception, in fact he is completely awesome, i still cannot get over that whole fiasco on that metal grinder. I keep thinking this could not be happening, maybe I am missing something and Alex is actually a cyborg or a half breed of something but no, it was all teenager with great spy skills passed down by his uncle without him knowing it. Agood start of a great series. Can't wait to read book 2.

Customer rating is 5 of 5  Very enjoyable book; my 12-year old son loved it   2010-04-06
By Debra Gallant (Washington DC metro areas)
My son read this book on his last day of spring break. He started reading it at noon on his iTouch and finished it at 6:30 tonight. It must have been a great book for him to sit still non-stop to read a book on his last day of freedom before he goes back to school tomorrow. In the first chapter, he informed me that the author already had written "the climax" of the story. I kept my thoughts to myself, smiling, thinking this must be a great book to already have risen to such exciting heights in the first chapter. And the book kept getting better. He has already downloaded the second book onto his iTouch to read later tonight. He heard about the Alex Rider books from the same friends who recommended James Patterson's Maximum Ride series to him. He loved the Maximum Ride books and was sad when his finished the last book in the series.

This book was a pretty good read, but it was predictable overall and more of a little kid book than I thought it would be. However, the book included several twists that I thought were interesting, and you didnt really want to put it down. I would definitely recommend this book for pre-teen audiences.
