Description
An international publishing sensation, Stieg Larsson's The Girl together with the Dragon Tattoo combines murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue into one satisfyingly advanced and entertainingly atmospheric novel.

Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden's wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Mutually they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

From the Trade Paperback edition.
Amazon Excellent of the Month, September 2008: One time you begin The Girl together with the Dragon Tattoo, there's no turning back. This debut thriller--the first in a trilogy from the late Stieg Larsson--is a serious page-turner rivaling the excellent of Charlie Huston and Michael Connelly. Mikael Blomkvist, a one time-respected financial journalist, watches his professional life rapidly crumble all-around him. Prospects be visible bleak until an unexpected (and unsettling) propose to resurrect his name is expanded by an old-school titan of Swedish industry. The catch--and there's always a catch--is this Blomkvist must first use a year researching a mysterious disappearance this has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. Together with few other options, he accepts and enlists the help of investigator Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood genius together with a cache of authority issues. Little is as it seems in Larsson's novel, but there is at least one constant: you really don't would like to mess together with the girl together with the dragon tattoo. --Dave Callanan

Customer rating is 3 of 5  Don't get what all the fuss is about, mildly enjoyable read   2010-07-31

I jumped on this wagon because I figured it wasn't a coincidence that this book is currently the hottest book on the planet and the American movie version has every A-list actress from Keira Knightley to Kristen Steward vying for the title role. Not to say that it's a bad book, but I honestly don't get what all the fuss is about. The mystery is ok I guess but kind of letdown when it's finally solved. Salander and Blomkvist are not the most likeable protagonists but my main issue was the throwing around of so many names and not really developing any of the those characters. The pace of the book is relatively slow for a murder mystery and there are a lot of pages where nothing is really happening. I do, however, say the book is "ok" because it kept me reading until the end to find out the mystery. Decent summer read but I've read better.

No wonder you see everyone reading this series. It's in simple language and the characters are so intresting. I hung on every word and really liked his style. Hated it to end. Now on to the next book.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Definitely a book you won't put down until the end - and then you'll find the clever segue to the next volume in the trilogy - so well written and with such surprising (but logical if you think about it) twists the reader is carried on a cloud in a world in Sweden (and that is new, too) that makes the most of technology, high risks, romance, and all of those other human emotions that build a great story. Run, don't walk, to your first volume, but be sure the next two are close at hand, lest you feel incomplete when the first is done. Don't stop to sleep, you won't need it!

BOUGHT THE BOOK ON SOMEONE'S RECOMMENDATION. WHEN I FIRST STARTED THE BOOK, I WASN'T SO CRAZY ABOUT IT. I'M GLAD I CONTINUED READING IT, BECAUSE IT WAS TERRIFIC.

I wanted to give my thoughts on the book. There are many other reviews that describe how I feel about the book, like Lee Goldberg's review here "Cliche-ridden, exposition heavy dud"

The most fascinating thing I found about the book was COFFEE. WOW do the Swedes like coffee. The author mentions coffee on every page in every context he could.
Would you like a cup of coffee
Please put on a pit of coffee
Blomvkist was having a cup of cofee as he read his notes
At the cafe he sat watching outside as he had his coffee
They warmed up the cold coffee at 11pm and discussed the matter

Oh about the real topic of the book. Yes the book has some pretty violent and graphic material but, don't many books? What's so special about the heroine? She's a hacker - BIG DEAL.

The main male character seems to be a Don Juan type and he has to try and have sex with any woman he comes into contact with? All men in this book come off as sadists and women haters, but I guess that's ok since the real title of the book in Sweden was Men Who Hate Women.

As for the whole murder mystery, I find it quite implausible, once the whole mystery is revealed, that the murders could go on for so long without no one knowing anything into the matter. It seems HIGHLY implausible something like this could have gone on for so long. In the end, maybe I am just out of touch with this book.

You really need to read all reviews especially the highest-rated negative review. I agreed with that negative review more than the highly positive one.

Frankly, I'm quite shocked women love this book so much. I won't even bother reading the next two books in the series. I have no desire and there are many other books I'll want to read.
