Description
In a daring and chilling debut, Brad Thor draws us into a sinister labyrinth of political intrigue and international terrorism, providing up an explosive cocktail of unrelenting action -- and a shattering climax -- as one man is pushed to the edge.

On the snow-covered slopes of Utah, the unthinkable has just become a nightmarish reality: thirty Secret Service agents have been viciously executed and the vacationing president of the United States is kidnapped by one of the much lethal terrorist organizations in the Middle East -- the dreaded Fatah.

But one man, surviving agent and exNavy SEAL Scot Harvath, doesn't think the Fatah is responsible for the attack. Driven by his professional code of duty and honor -- and a solemn vow to avenge his fallen comrades -- Scot creates his own rules to get some answers. But his search for the truth raises the blood pressure of his superiors...and casts his own life in mortal jeopardy. The deadly machinations have been set in motion by a shadowy coalition, comprising some of the highest-ranking officials in government and business -- men who operate above the law, men who realize the threat Scot poses to their concealed agenda...men who will do anything to stop him.

Now framed for murder and on the run, Scot goes for broke and takes his own brand of justice to the unlikeliest situate of all -- the towering mountains of Switzerland. It is there this he locates an improbable ally in the stunning Claudia Mueller of the Swiss Federal Attorney's Office. Mutually they must brave the subzero temperatures and sheer heights of treacherous Mount Pilatus -- and enter the den of the much notorious team of professional killers the world has ever known.

In this incredibly quick-paced thriller, a conspiracy hatched shut to the Oval Office outcomes in the kidnapping of the president and the slaughter of a company of Secret Service agents commanded by ex-Navy SEAL Scot Harvath. The story careers from the ski slopes of Utah to the top of Switzerland's Mount Pilatus and sets Scot on an impossible mission: recover the president, evade renegade Swiss spy Gerhard Miner and his cadre of trained agents, and elude the American conspirators who are hot on his trail. Framed for murder, his status in tatters, his former colleagues turned against him, Harvath locates an unlikely ally in a stunning Swiss prosecutor who's been checkmated by Miner one time too often. Mutually they have fun a high-stakes strategy of mixed "doubles" to save the president and uncover the conspiracy. Brad Thor's debut novel is a tightly wound spy tale this makes up in excitement what it lacks in subtlety and character development. Ludlum fans will love it. --Jane Adams

Customer rating is 3 of 5  Scot Harvath saves the day!   2010-09-05
By Robert Schmidt (Honolulu, HI USA)
Secret Service agent, ex-Navy SEAL, Olympic-caliber skier... Scot Harvath has the experience and training to protect the President.

But the President is kidnapped, and his entire Secret Service entourage is killed. Harvath is the lone survivor, protecting the President's daughter from a similar fate.

It's personal.

Harvath rejects the orders from his bosses in the Secret Service to stay away, and from the FBI to leave the investigation to them. He has his friends to avenge, his reputation to salvage, and his President to rescue.

As with other books of this genre, the bad guys are really bad, and the good guys save the day. Author Brad Thor had us wince, laugh, and groan at some of the situations and cliched conversational banter, but I did want to find out how the story ended. Surprise! Scot Harvath saves the day! He can even prevent milk chocolate from melting under his coat... a key piece of evidence, it turns out.

In this abridged CD version of the book, reader Armand Schultz has a great repertoire of voices for the various characters. I suspect the unabridged version of the book is the more interesting and satisfying edition. This shortened version was a bit too... abridged.

I needed something to read on my flight to Lana'i Hawaii for my vacation and after digging around a bit I almost chose Brad Thor's latest novel "Foreign Influence" Foreign Influence: A Thriller (Scot Harvath). But I discovered he had several previous books out with the same main character so I figured I'd start at the beginning. His first book and the subject of this review is "The Lions of Lucerne" The Lions of Lucerne. It is well written, fast paced and hard to put down.

You are introduced to Scot Harvath an agent of the U.S. Secret Service protecting the President of the United States and his daughter. Through a series of events, domestic and international, Scot finds himself in a variety of death defying situations that force him to use every bit of his training and experience to survive. The intrigue and plot involves the FBI, CIA, NSA, Secret Service and other high levels of the U.S. government. You also meet up with ruthless terrorists, assassins and elements within out own government bent on extracting millions of dollars after kidnapping the U.S. President.

It's a great first book for Brad Thor. I look forward to reading the rest of his books right up to "Foreign Influence" and beyond.

What a great book- this is my first introduction to Brad Thor and the hero Scott Harvath. Very creative, twisting plots- sure our hero is unbeatable, collects some bumps and bruises along the way but what a great action book. Scott Harvath is like a modern day Jack Bauer- absolutely loved the book and now I'm onto State of the Union.

I've been looking for some easy reading on my Kindle and ran across good reviews for Brad Thor's books. This was just what the doctor ordered. 2D characters? Check! Requirement for suspension of disbelief? Check! Fun, fast, entertaining? Double check! I'll read more!

A fantastic read! Recently finished the Vince Flynn (Mitch Rabb) series. Brad Thor's character is equally exciting.
